Twitch emote and badge sizes

Everything Twitch asks for, in one table, checked October 2026, and below it what those limits mean if you draw in pixel art.

What this means for pixel art

Chat shows emotes at 28 px and badges at 18 px. If you draw at 112 and let Twitch shrink it, the pixels blur. Draw on a small grid (28 or 56 for emotes, 18 or 36 for badges) and scale by whole numbers: 28 → 56 → 112 and 18 → 36 → 72 are exact doublings, so each pixel stays a clean square. The emote and badge presets here draw at 56 and 36 and reduce to chat size by majority vote, or you can draw at chat size directly.

The 25 KB badge cap is only a problem for photographic or gradient-heavy badges. A 72-px pixel-art PNG with 16 colours is 1 to 3 KB.

Default sub-badge milestones

Twitch fills in badges at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months and lets you add more. A ladder reads best as one object that gains something each tier.

Questions people ask

Does Twitch resize emotes automatically?

For emotes, yes: upload one square image between 112 and 4096 px and Twitch creates the 28 and 56 versions. For badges, no: you upload 18, 36 and 72 yourself.

Can emotes have a background?

They can, but chat has light and dark themes, so a solid background looks wrong for half your viewers. Use transparency.

What is the best grid for pixel art emotes?

28×28 or 56×56. Both scale to 112 by whole numbers.
